Place Moulay Hassan

Historical SiteMedina

Place Moulay Hassan is the main square in Essaouira and the perfect spot to feel the vibe of the city. Located right by the port and medina, it’s always buzzing with life—cafés, street performers, and locals just hanging out. It’s a great place to relax, sip mint tea, and people-watch with the sea breeze in the air. From here, you can easily explore the historic Skala de la Ville , the lively medina , or walk along the beach. The square also comes alive during festivals and music events. It’s open, spacious, and full of charm—Essaouira’s beating heart.

Visit Duration

More than 1 hour

💡 This duration is based on typical visitor patterns and includes time for exploring, taking photos and enjoying the attraction at a comfortable pace.

💡 Visitor Tips

Street Performers

In the evening, local Gnaoua musicians or street artists often perform here — a great way to experience Moroccan culture live. Just keep a few dirhams ready as a tip if you stop to enjoy.

Restrooms Are Scarce

Public restrooms aren't easy to find, so use the facilities at a café after ordering something, or head back to your accommodation when possible.

Wind and Weather

Essaouira is known as the Windy City of Africa. Always bring a light jacket, even in summer, especially if you're staying until sunset.

🎯 Stay Smart Here

Eat Like a Local

Avoid the overpriced tourist traps right on the square. Walk a few blocks toward the port or deeper into the medina for more authentic, better-priced food.

Surprise Charges at Cafés

Some cafés may charge extra for terrace seating or include items you didn’t order (like bread or olives). Always ask for a menu and double-check the bill before paying.

Fake Guides

As in many tourist areas in Morocco, unofficial guides may approach offering tours or help. If you're not interested, politely decline with a firm "La shukran" (No, thank you).

Beautiful Square

Reviewed by David Rodriguez
on September 7, 2025
Located on the edge of the old walled city, this impressive square has a unique rhythm that changes with the passing hours. In the early morning it feels almost deserted, offering a quiet glimpse of its vastness. As the morning progresses, the terraces begin to fill, drawing in visitors and creating a lively buzz. During the hottest part of the day, the pace slows, with the square settling into a calmer atmosphere. But by evening it comes alive again — vibrant and full of energy as the day-trippers leave and locals gather. It’s also one of the best spots to watch the sunset, with the golden light casting a magical glow over the scene.
